Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
