Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given physical folders of files that included little new information.
