EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
