British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
